Welcome to the 37th Annual Africa in April Cultural Awareness Festival in Memphis! Join us for four days of excitement, celebration, and exploration as we dive into a rich tapestry of cultures, traditions, and flavors.

  • Dr. David L. Acey, Sr. and Mrs. Yvonne B. Acey, two educators, create the Africa in April Festival in the basement of LeMoyne-Owen College -  a historically black college located in Memphis, TN.

  • The inaugural Africa in April Festival takes place in City Hall Plaza (now "Civic Plaza"), in Downtown Memphis. Early events included traditional African drumming and a featured country.

  • Tennessee State Senate honors Dr. David L. Acey, Sr. with a resolution for his service and contributions to the community. He would go on to be recognized by local, state, and federal government offices and receive a personal call from 44th US President Barack Obama.

  • Africa in April relocates to Robert R. Church Park and expands to include a large Children & Seniors Day featuring cultural vendors. Over time, the festival expands to include a luncheon, parade, and live entertainment.

  • Mrs. Yvonne B. Acey is honored with a Women of Achievement award for her community leadership. She would go on to receive annual honors from her sorority, (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc), mayors, governors, and legislative leaders.

  • Africa in April (AIA) celebrates its 37th year and the Republic of Gambia with its annual International Entrepreneur's Luncheon, Children and Seniors' Day, Health and Wellness & Community Day, International Music Day, and, its most recent addition, the AIA Dinner and Dance Party.
